Quiz 4

1) “Hallmark Five: We Embrace The Gift Of Diversity.” In what way does Strayer’s textbook, Ways of the World, reflect Hallmark 5 of the SND de Namur?

Strayer is able to reflect NDNU's "Hallmark Five: We Embrace The Gift of Diversity" through his textbook, Ways of the World by getting the reader to understand and view points of history through different and sometimes extremely subtle lenses. At the beginning of the book he provides us with gatherer-hunter idea. This was the first time I have heard this throughout all my history classes. Another was his reference to the Huns and how they should be considered a Civilization based on their contributions to the world during their time. He tries to remove past bias's the reader my have and questions some fundamental preconceptions people have based on prior history classes.

2) Please refer to the learning outcomes in your syllabus for this class. Did the course meet these outcomes? Were any of the outcomes not met? In answering this question, cite specific course activities or assignments that stand out to you.

World History 2020 meets all the "Learning Outcomes".
- Outcome 1 is demonstrated by the quizzes and the in class debates. Students are required to participate in teams to "prove" a sides point utilizing the previous readings and in class material about a past society.
- Outcome 2 A great example of this is the discussion of the Huns. How they should be considered a Civilization worth discussing and how their advances in warfare, animal husbandry helped to shape future advancements.
- Outcome 3 Students are able to analyze ethical implications from past events through the weekly blogging and through the in-class discussion.
- Outcome 4 A story that comes to mind is the Epic of Gilgamesh. The terms used in the story can be interrupted in different ways. Another one is the text of any religion.
- Outcome 5 This ties back into 1 where the students are required to present a side and defend it with facts from the reading or discussion leading up to the debate. This is interesting and provides some difficulty depending on your team and or the prompt.
- Outcome 6 One of the assignments was to read 2 passages about rulers and how they distributed water or wanted to make a impression on history based on the feats he had his people complete, then write about the leaders and to compare them.
- Outcome 7 This was completed through the six page research paper.

4) Are we moving into a new historical era? Do the items listed under “Post-Modern” reflect the world we live in today and the future we seem to be working toward? Why or why not?

We are moving towards a new historical era. The items in "Post-Modern" do reflect some aspects of the world we live in, but not necessarily where we are going. While cooperation is getting better among people, cooperations between people and governing bodies seem to be tense. Environmental sustainability could be considered something many generations have been aware of so I don't believe this counts to where we are moving. While project are going on and new ways to better the environment are being implemented we are going 1 step forwards and 2 back. The overall trend of the governing bodies seems to try and become more cooperative, this most likely wont be able to occur with the current relics in office. It will take about 3-5 generations before we reach a close to cooperative world. I would say with the newer generations, they do not have the entitlement their parents or grandparents show with the negativity towards different societal norms
